The
meeting was called to order at 10:18 a.m., Wednesday, October 27, 2010 by
President John Slader at the RC&D office in Oakland. Members present were Kent Neumann, Brent
Clark, Dawn Maslonka, Mark Schultz and Dick Leitschuck. Other
present were Deb Ward, RC&D Program Support Assistant and Twyla Witt,
Nebraska DED Division of Travel and Tourism. Self introductions were made. Motion
and second to approve the agenda carried.Motion and
second to approve the minutes of the September 22, 2010 Byway meeting carried.Treasurer’s Report- No receipts, expenditures of
$678 ($108- Website hosting & $570- Ad in 2011 Discover NE Nebraska
Visitor’s Guide) and an account balance of $533.83. Motion and second to accept
the Treasurer’s Report carried. Correspondence
Final Quarterly Tourism Input Session- November 12, 2010. Suggest cooperative marketing and to consider
utilizing video-conferencing or tele-conferencing for
future input and responding to this input. National Byway Conference- August
21-24, 2011 at Minneapolis, Minnesota.
$450 Registration, Rooms are $120 per night. More information after November 1st
at www.bywaysresourcecenter.org
Committee Reports Membership- Motion and second to keep dues at $15 for
Individuals, $50 for Partners and $5 for postage for regular mail
correspondence carried. Members need to provide
to the Oakland office a list of non-member businesses in their area that might
have tourism interests.
Motion
and second to provide $5 to members who recruit a new member by March 1, 2011
carried. Tonwantonga Historical Marker Site- Brent Clark,
Kent Neumann and Dick Leitschuck did a fall cleanup
of the vegetation at the site on October 11th. Brent is securing information on walking
trail surfaces from Nebraska Rubber Innovations and Rockport Recycling. Letters will be sent to Kristine Winter and
Dan Sayre with carbon copies to John Craig and Jim Pearson with the Nebraska
Department of Roads on the need for repairing the access road surface to the
site. Art Tour- “Looking for Art”- Along
the Byway- Scheduled for April 29, 30 and May 1, 2011. The first round of invitations and contact
letters will be sent soon. Directional signage to be developed. Survey- Since the electronic response was very low,
Survey Questionnaires will be mailed with membership recruitment letters. Nebraska Travel Conference- Brent Clark
reported on attending this Conference and the Nebraska Byway Meeting. Directional signage for tourism and event
Vendor Guides were discussed. Watchable
Wildlife Conference- Brent Clark attended and reported it was a very
tourism oriented event. Two Bird Tours held this year at Crystal Cove in South
Sioux City with follow-up CDs are examples of a wildlife activity that promotes
tourism. Website- The ownership of
the website has not been transferred to the Byway to date. New Business Nebraska Road Maps- Brent Clark has a small supply
available. The Byway suggests using
Byway funds to print Nebraska Road Maps to help promote tourism. Florence Area Request- Linda Meigs with the Florence Mill, who is interested in
expanding the Byway was invited to our meeting.
We understand that Rebecca Turner with the Nebraska City Chamber of
Commerce is also interested in expanding the Byway to their area. Twyla Witt
reported on tourism issues including the need for print promotional materials
for older tourists, while younger tourists respond to the Internet, CDs and
Flash Drive promotional material, the need for Entrance signs into Byways,
using Tourism Marketing sites, utilizing Tom Doering’s
Fact Sheet on tourism as well as VISTAS and Byways online and to try to attract
special interest tourists like Motorcyclers, Birders
and Wildlife Watchers. The Passport
Program will be available again this year. Next
Meeting- Agreed to meet at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at the
