In 1867 Thompson and William Craig, their families and others from Cadiz, Ohio who had served together in the Union Army purchased farmland with “college scrip”. James McMullin from Pennsylvania and P.S. Gibbs and family from Cape Cod homesteaded in the 1860s. The settlement incorporation papers were filed in 1867, a post office was established in 1874 and the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railroad came through in the 1880s. J.A. McLaughlin organized the Craig grain, Lumber & Implement Company. In 1896 the corn crop was excellent but it was worth only 8 cents per bushel. McLaughlin went to Chicago and secured a contract from Norton & Worthington to buy 100,000 bushels of corn. Farmers brought their crops to Craig from as far as 20 miles.
Craig’s population peaked in 1930 at 452. Today’s population is 240.
Craig is located between Tekamah and Oakland just off of Highway 30.
