In the early 1870s, the pioneer families Bailey and Burdic settled in northern Washington County. The area grew and railroad tracks were laid from Omaha. Samuel Hermann was the conductor on the first train to pass through. The post office was using the name “Cuming City”. The people wanted a better name. Remembering Samuel Hermann, they decided to call the town “Hermann”. The second ‘n’ was later dropped.
Downtown Herman consisted of a train station, grocery store, “The Herman Independent” newspaper, hardware store, lumberyard, hotel and bank.
On June 13th, 1899, a cyclone nearly blew the town away. Downtown was demolished. 13 people lost their lives. The citizens stayed and rebuilt. Herman soon boasted “the largest department store for a town of its size” in Nebraska. A bank and one of the largest retail implement businesses in the state opened. A pool hall, restaurant, meat market, drug store, doctor, dentist, veterinarian and Grange Hall completed the town. Herman’s population peaked in 1940 with 427 residents. From “Nebraska, Our Towns”

Today, Herman has a population of 340. Two blocks west of the Highway is the village park with a large grassy area and shade trees, a picnic shelter, a volleyball court, a ball diamond, and playground equipment.
