 About Lewis and Clark

Lewis and Clark
Meriweather Lewis and William Clark went on a two-year expedition with more than 40 men. The first months of their journey was spent exploring along the Missouri River.

Lewis and Clark encountered their first Native Americans near Fort Atkinson State Park, Fort Calhoun. The men met with Otoe and Missouri cheifs and declared the land as property of the United States.

The travelors discovered their first ever badger at what is now DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge. The badger was later stuffed and sent to President Jefferson.

Lewis and Clark State Park has full size replicas of the keelboat and pirogues used by the Corps of Discovery.

The only casualty on the two-year journey was Sgt. Charles Floyd. The Sgt. Floyd Monument and Park (Sioux City) is located on the bluff where he died and was buried. It is believed that he died of appendicitis.
